A Community Seed Library is Now Available!
Last year, N.C. Cooperative Extension, Cherokee County Center staff began meeting with and assisting Murphy Public Library staff (Melissa Barker and Beth Rollins) with the resources needed to plan and implement a free community seed library. That idea has now come to reality and the Seed Library is now open to the public!
The mission of the Seed Library is "to offer free seeds to anyone in our community who wishes to grow their own food. The program aims to encourage gardening and seed saving in our community and to promote self-reliance and a culture of sharing. This program provides reliable information and education regarding sustainable personal food production".
Seeds have been cataloged into three categories including flowers, vegetables, and herbs. The Seed Library is a self-serve process. As you enter the library the Seed Library is on the right, housed in a repurposed card catalog system. Checking out seeds is an easy process; you will write your name and indicate the type and quantity of seeds on the check-out clipboard. There is a limit of five packets per visit. Community members are allowed to donate organic, heirloom, open pollinated seeds (or commercially packaged seeds) to the library. To do this you will bring in your seeds and fill out a donation slip, giving your seeds to the librarian at the circulation desk.
