MURPHY, NC – July 17, 2025 – The Grape Creek Extension Community Association (ECA) Club held its much-anticipated annual picnic, a delightful gathering that combined community spirit with a heartwarming dedication to local education. Members converged for an afternoon of fellowship, food, and a special initiative to support Cherokee County teachers.

2025 ECA Annual Picnic

A highlight of this year’s picnic was the generous contribution of school supplies by ECA members. Demonstrating their commitment to nurturing the next generation, attendees brought a wide array of essential items, from notebooks and pens to art and cleaning supplies. These thoughtful donations were organized into three comprehensive school supply baskets, each brimming with resources designed to assist teachers in their vital work.

The baskets were presented to three deserving Cherokee County educators: Janet Drew (Pre-K Assistant at Peachtree Elementary, Debbie Ledford (2nd Grade at Ranger Elementary) , and Tina Hayes (EC Teacher at Ranger Elementary). The ECA Club recognized these teachers for their tireless dedication and profound impact on the lives of their students. The gesture aimed to alleviate some of the out-of-pocket expenses many teachers incur for classroom necessities and to show profound appreciation for their efforts.

Teacher receives basket of school supplies

“It has been a happy pleasure to help prepare the annual picnic. This is one of the highlights of our club to help teachers, in our small way, at the beginning of the school year” says Sue Rhodes, Cherokee County ECA President. A member of the Grape Creek ECA, Nancy Helms comments “Our annual picnic shows the love and support we get from the community”. The ladies of Grape Creek ECA hope these baskets provide a little extra support and show Ms. Drew, Ms. Ledford, and Ms. Hayes how much they value them.

The picnic, held under clear skies, was a resounding success, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie among attendees. The Grape Creek ECA Club continues to be a vibrant force in the community, dedicated to various charitable endeavors and social activities that enrich the lives of its members and neighbors in Cherokee County.
