2024 Donation Station
Cherokee County Year in Review
2024 was a successful year for the Donation Station program at the Murphy Farmers Market! Extension staff and volunteers in Cherokee County worked hard throughout the season to procure donations for Bellview Community Center, Moore House Ministries, and the Cherokee County Sharing Center while supporting local farmers.
6 market days | In 2024, staff and volunteers hosted Donation Stations on six market days. On Donation Station days, volunteers share information with market goers about the program, local food, food insecurity, and the food relief agency recipient. |
729 pounds donated | Over the six market days, 729 pounds of produce were donated to food insecure community members. This includes pounds of produce donated by customers and pounds of produce purchased with monetary donations from customers. |
$1,204 spent with local farmers | $531 was collected and spent locally with the farmers at the market, through valued customer support. Combined with the pounds of produce donated from customers, a total estimated value of $1,204 ($1.88/lb) was spent in total over the six market days. |
49 volunteer hours served | The Donation Station is volunteer-run meaning there are no overhead fees being taken out of the donations. Volunteers receive a training before the market season and assist with market set-up and breakdown, engaging with customers, and purchasing from farmers. |
740 individuals served | In 2024, this farmers market quality produce was donated to approximately 370 families, benefitting 740 individuals through the Bellview Community Center, Moore House Ministries, and the Cherokee County Sharing Center. |
