Nine local youth participated in the recent 4-H Sew Happy to Learn to Sew Day Camp. The youth were able to get a taste of machine and hand sewing as well as learning about the machines they used, cutting a pattern, and preparing their materials.

The summer day camp was held August 5-8 and was only $40. The youth were able to use new machines that were purchased using donations to 4-H from the Reynolds family. We also received a like new machine from Gary James that his wife, Karen, used for crafting before she passed away. The machines now can be used by other 4-H clubs wanting to complete sewing projects like our 4-H horse club that wants to sew reusable grocery bags from animal feed bags. Also our annual 4-H Holiday Workshop will also be using them to make some of their crafts this year.

The youth were able to complete a small pillow which was a practice run for their book pillow they would sew which would be around 18″ x 18″. A book pillow is a pillow with a pocket to keep your book that you are reading in when you are not reading it. You can then use the pillow while you are reading to be comfortable. The practice pillow had to be hand stitched closed so the youth understood how to hand stitch. The participants were also able to pick out their own fabrics for their reversible hobo bags. They used their knowledge from the pillow project to include a pocket on the inside and outside of the bag. They also learned about matching fabrics with solids and patterns.
