Collapse ▲The N.C. Cooperative Extension Cherokee County Center in association with N.C. A&T State University is hosting the second annual Cherokee County Small Farms Week Extension Food Drive from January 4th – March 30th, 2024. All donations will be donated to food pantries within the county. Local pantry managers were surveyed through an Extension needs assessment that revealed the most requested items include canned vegetables, dry beans, pop-top products, and can openers.
Those who wish to donate can drop non-perishable items off in downtown Murphy, inside the Courthouse Annex building located at 40 Peachtree Street. Office hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
(If you are not sure where this is located– Enter through the red door to the left of King’s Pharmacy entrance and there you will see the donation drop.)
Items that we are not accepting include:
- Home-canned food
- Expired food
- Items that need refrigeration
- Damaged food items- including dented or bloated cans
- Non-food items (with the exception of the can openers)
We hope those who choose to donate will also learn about choosing healthier canned food items. While you’re shopping, look for items that are reduced sodium or have no salt added. If these items aren’t available, rinsing canned beans is another great way to reduce the amount of extra sodium we are consuming.
Food Insecurity in Cherokee County
Feeding America reports 34 million people in America and 14.7% of residents in Cherokee County are considered food insecure. This means that over 4,000 individuals did not have access to a reliable source of food during the past year.
The increased cost of living is impacting communities and populations across the state. Children are at an even greater risk of facing food insecurity with 26% of children facing food insecurity. We hope that you will take part in curbing the hunger in our county by providing food items to those who need them most in our community!
