Welcome to Farm School 2024. This is the 3rd year that Cherokee and Graham County will be working together to provide you with classes related to farming, gardening, and agriculture. Some of the classes are free and some requires we charge a fee to recover cost. To register, click on the classes below:

October 19, 2024-Learn The Steps To Be A Master Gardener:

This is an informational meeting to explain the process of how to become a Certified NC State Extension Master Gardener℠ in Cherokee County.

November 2, 2024-Learn The Steps To Be A Master Gardener:

This is an informational meeting to explain the process of how to become a Certified Extension Master Gardener in Cherokee County.

January 15, 2024-Resources to Identify Insects and Diseases:

Learn resources available to help you identify insects and plant diseases. Also, learn how to collect specimens and take digital pictures so plant diseases and insects can be identified.

February 8, 2024-Resources To Identify Insects and Diseases:

February 10, 2024-Resources To Identify Insects and Diseases:

February 28, 2024 through April 17, 2024-Let’s Garden (Spring Garden Classes):

These classes are available for a fee of $90.00 for participating in one or all 8. The classes are also a requirement to become a Certified Master Gardener in Cherokee County and are held weekly.

March 14, 2024-Pesticide Training For Private Applicators  (V Training):

Learn how the quality of the water that is used in a pesticide application can affect the effectiveness and results of the application. Participants with a private pesticide license will receive 2 hours of credit toward license renewal.

March 18, 2024-Poultry Flock Management

This class will provide steps and tips for raising and maintaining a healthy backyard flock of poultry.

March 25, 2024-The Basics of Soil Sampling:

Learn how and why to take a soil sample. Also, learn about how to read the results of the sample and steps to correct common soil fertility and pH problems.

March 28, 2024-Planning a Pesticide Application (X Training):

Learn the Importance of Planning Your Pesticide Application and what to expect from a Pesticide Investigation. This class will provide 2 hours of credit in the A,B,G,H,I,K,L,M,N,O,T, D and X designations.

May 8 thru June 19, 2024-Firescape Training (Virtual except for 1 in-person meeting May 8 at 7 p.m. )

Learn practices that a homeowner can adopt to help protect the home and neighborhood such as fuel breaks; cleaning the roof and gutters and trees from leaves; tree and plant spacing in the landscape. The Firescape Training is a self-paced, online course that can be completed in the comfort of your home and will include a blend of video presentations, activities, and online instruction. The knowledge participants gain can be used to educate communities on firescaping and the wildfire risk reduction measures can be used to protect their home also.

This self-paced, online course can be completed in the comfort of your home and will include a blend of video presentations, activities, and online instruction. Coursework instructions will be provided to participants weekly in a virtual meeting for 6 weeks.

There will be one in-person meeting on May 8 at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at 699 Connaheeta Street to provide an introduction to the course. You must attend the meeting and the remainder of the training will be online.

August 6, 2024-Pesticide Safety Training For Private Applicators  (V Training):

August 27, 2024-The Importance of Understanding Pesticide Labels (X Training):

Pesticide Labels, Farm Inspections, and Top 10 Reasons To Use Personal Protective Equipment will be discussed. This class will provide 2 hours certification training in the A,B,G,H,I,K,L,M,N,O,T, D and X designations.

October 21 thru December 2, 2024-Firescape Training (Virtual except for in-person meeting October 21 at 7 p.m.)

Ag Options Informational Meeting (TBD):

Each year we host an Ag Options Grant Informational Meeting. The date has not been determined but is normally held the last week of August. We will provide a registration link when the date is known.

Master Gardener Certification Classes:

Master Gardener Certification Classes will be held from September 10 through October 14, 2024. To be eligible to attend the classes you must attend an Informational Session and also the Spring Garden Series. To learn more about the process visit the Master Gardener Training Schedule For 2024.

Also included in the Farm Series Classes will be educational programs taught in Graham County. Classes will include:

February- Fruit Tree Grafting

March- Small Flock Management

April- Diagnosing Tomato Problems

June- Rooting Native Azaleas

September- Ag Options Introduction

November- Beef Cattle Program
