Sunday, June 20, at 7:00p.m., 4-H youth and non 4-H youth, parents, grandparents, riding instructors, barn owners, 4-H volunteers, 4-H agents, and horses ascended on the WNC Agricultural Center, in Fletcher, NC for three full days of fun and learning.

Youth were able to get professional instruction for the first two days and were able to test their riding skills in the arena with cattle learning the basic of cattle sorting. This year the riders were able to not only ride in one discipline but try out other riding disciplines as well if they chose too.

Riders came from all across the West District and other areas of the state as far away as Gaston County to participate in this fun, Learn by Doing activity. Each morning started with a safety meeting where the youth were comically entertained by 4-H volunteer and Western/Ranch riding instructor, James Lamb. Then on Monday and Tuesday, they saddled up and rode in their chosen discipline of either Beginner/Cloverbud, Western/Ranch, English/Hunt Seat, Games, and even a Non-trotting/Gaited horse class was offered. On Wednesday, riders could work cows with Justin Gillespie in the main arena or head to the outside covered arena to see how their horse would handle obstacles and were given pointers by our special clinicians for a day Jackie Turnbull and Trent Rhea.

width="431" height="326"During the day if participants had down time they could make horse related crafts. Participants were also encouraged to make sure their stalls were clean and horses cared for by participating in the Golden Shovel Award. The youth did such a great job that we had to award a first and second place Golden Shovel award. On Tuesday evening, participants, their families, and volunteers, were able to share in a picnic dinner, have their portraits taken with their horse, and then play horseless games, which ended with a huge water balloon fight. The kids had a blast and some of our adults joined in with their own water guns from the stands.

width="386" height="292" Special thanks goes out to 4-H Volunteer, from Caldwell County, Robbie Denning. Robbie was our clinic chairman and outdid himself with all the work he put in over the four days we were there. Off course we also want to thank all our volunteers and 4-H Extension Staff for all that everyone contributed to make this years West District 4-H Horsemanship Clinic a huge success!!
