Camphor shot borers were found in traps in Conover this week. Camphor shot borers make holes in trunks, leaving sawdust around a hole that is about the size of a pencil lead. Often the rear end of the insect is visible (see photo at left). This pest is related to the granulate ambrosia beetle and should be managed similarly. If you've had trouble with this pest in the past, it is time to begin preventative trunk sprays to keep trees from becoming infested. Trunk sprays of bifenthrin with a sticker will protect the trunk for two weeks at most. Sprays will need to be reapplied.
