Cherokee County has been abnormally dry (D0) to moderate drought (D1) for the last few weeks according to the Drought Management Advisory Council. Currently we have reached a severe drought intensity (D2). Drought affects our pastures and cattle producers management decisions. Some farmers are considering grazing standing corn and possibly harvesting as silage. There are concerns with this management option with nitrate toxicity and aflatoxin in the crops. Testing is free with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. Also check out the Guide to Mycotoxins and Mycotoxins in Dairy Cattle.
