Description: Brrrr! It’s so cold outside! As you keep your homes warm, do you think about carbon monoxide? Most people don’t, but you should. Join us for an hour of information on carbon monoxide and how you can protect yourself and your family for a Safe Home, Healthy Home. Register in advance to receive your carbon monoxide detector at the end of the program. Registration fee is $10.

Description:

This horsemanship clinic is designed for youth to increase their horsemanship knowledge and riding skills. Each child brings his/her horse and throughout the three-day clinic, participants will receive instruction in riding classes by selected disciplines. On the third day, we will have a team penning program program and horsemanship program in which the youth can participate in. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced rider, this clinic has something to offer you!

Topics youth may learn about during 4-H Cooking 101, how to: use MyPlate; avoid spreading germs while cooking; measure and mix ingredients; test baked goods for doneness; brown meat; set the table for a family meal; understanding and preventing foodborne illnesses; thawing frozen foods; proper knife techniques; how to read Nutrition Facts labels; how to make soups, rice, and pasta; make bread; grilling meats, vegetables, and fruit; make butter. Youth may learn about: yeast, gluten, and different types of fats; herbs and spices and how to make ethnic foods; making cakes, candy, pastries, and pies. We will have fun and experience many different foods.

This program is offered through the 21st Century Afterschool Program in Cherokee County, please contact this program to register for their summer program.

Description:

North Carolina State University’s CATCH Kids Club serves youth at Summer Food Service Sites and After School sites across North Carolina.

The program consists of 8 sessions, 30 minutes in length, that are designed to teach youth about nutrition and physical activity in a fun and engaging way through activities and games. Session topics include ways to be active inside and outside, participating in activities to improve heart and bone health, eating more fruits and vegetables, and drinking more water.

All participants are awarded a certificate of participation at the completion of the program in addition to a jump rope, recipe and nutrition activity book. Group evaluation is conducted to capture behavior change related to nutrition and physical activity.

North Carolina State University’s CATCH Kids Club curriculum was adapted from CATCH Kids Club Healthy Habits and Nutrition K-5th Grade by Lindsay Goolsby, MS, RD, LDN, Gretchen Hofing, MPH, RD, Jenelle Wass, MS, RD, LDN. CATCH Kids Club was written Susan Lulton, MA and Jerri L. Berry, MA, RD, LD
