Topics youth may learn about during 4-H Cooking 101, how to: use MyPlate; avoid spreading germs while cooking; measure and mix ingredients; test baked goods for doneness; brown meat; set the table for a family meal; understanding and preventing foodborne illnesses; thawing frozen foods; proper knife techniques; how to read Nutrition Facts labels; how to make soups, rice, and pasta; make bread; grilling meats, vegetables, and fruit; make butter. Youth may learn about: yeast, gluten, and different types of fats; herbs and spices and how to make ethnic foods; making cakes, candy, pastries, and pies. We will have fun and experience many different foods.

This program is offered through the 21st Century Afterschool Program in Cherokee County, please contact this program to register for their summer program.

North Carolina 4-H Congress is an annual educational event sponsored by North Carolina

4-H at NC State University and planned by the State 4-H Council. The council is composed of 20 young people who serve as officers from their respective districts and 4 state officers who are elected at Congress. NC 4-H Congress will be attended by approximately 600 youth ranging in age from 13 to 18 and representing every county in North Carolina.

North Carolina State University’s CATCH Kids Club serves youth at Summer Food Service Sites and After School sites across North Carolina.

The program consists of 8 sessions, 30 minutes in length, that are designed to teach youth about nutrition and physical activity in a fun and engaging way through activities and games. Session topics include ways to be active inside and outside, participating in activities to improve heart and bone health, eating more fruits and vegetables, and drinking more water.

All participants are awarded a certificate of participation at the completion of the program in addition to a jump rope, recipe and nutrition activity book. Group evaluation is conducted to capture behavior change related to nutrition and physical activity.
