Collapse ▲The Chatham County Youth Livestock Team competed in the 4-H NC State Livestock Judging and Skillathon Competition on July 28th and 29th. The Skillathon Competition took place on July 28th, which was made up of several different portions. Participants took a written test related to livestock and had to identify a selection of breeds, feeds, meat cuts, tools, and equipment related to cattle, goats, sheep, and swine. Participants also judged and placed classes of hay, wool, and meats. The Livestock Judging Competition took place on July 29th. This competition was made up of 10 classes of animals that participants had to rank 1-4. Participants also had to give reasons to a judge for why they placed the class in that order. On Friday night, the awards banquet was held at Talley Student Union on NC State’s campus.
Our intermediate team of participants ages 11-13 were William Morgan and Lilli Pilkington. William Morgan received the following awards: 8th in Evaluation, 6th in Quality Assurance, 10th in Cattle Judging which placed him as the 7th Overall Intermediate Individual. Lilli Pilkington received the following awards: 4th in Evaluation, 9th in Swine Judging, which placed her as the 9th Overall Intermediate Individual.
Our senior team of participants ages 14-18 were Mykalah Pettitt, Nathan Barbour, and Emma Langley. This team really worked well together against strong competition.
We are so proud of all of our team members and the effort they’ve put into this team. The growth and progress that they’ve made in the last 5 months is exponential. We are excited to begin practicing again in September for our next competition.
