May is here and which means spring, strawberries, flowers, baby animals, the promise of tomatoes to come. The Rowan County Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee is excited to announce the Arts, and Ag Farm Tour will be happening this year. The tour will be focused around the western side of Rowan County in Mt. Ulla and Cleveland, with six different stops. It is a self-guided FREE tour Saturday from June 5th, 10-4 p.m. You will get to experience Rowan County Agriculture and meet some of the county’s finest farmers and artists on this tour. The Rowan Country Life Museum is the home base for this year’s tour. The museum has made lots of improvements and added lots of exhibits. The arts in Rowan County are varied. Some represent the past when creating art as entertainment and amusement; some are made from natural products and designed for beauty. Artists are chosen to represent each of these areas. Not far from the Country Life Museum is Evans Family Farm which is also on the tour. Jessica and her family raise sheep, chickens, and pigs. Experience how they rotate their animals on their pastures to keep their soil healthy and robust and improve the health of their animals. This year we have a dairy on our tour Lutheridge Farm, a small dairy that is in the process of beginning to bottle its milk and makes artisan cheese.

Ray Horton Farms raises soybeans, corn, wheat, and barley. The barley goes to Carolina Malt, where it is malted and sold to breweries across North andSouth Carolina. There will be plenty of tractors and fun at Ray Horton Farm. Chuck Payne,  Lee, and Rosty Menius will be at Ray Horton’s Farm. Chuck forges metal into knives, then finished construction with decorative handles. Lee also works in forging metal into knives and creating leather sheaths for them. Rosty works in wood, making a variety of products. If names are familiar, Wild Turkey Workshop seems just right for Lee and Rosty. Rounding out the tour is Tranquility Farm, where you can relax and enjoy a muscadine slushie and West Rowan High School FFA program at West Rowan High School. West Rowan FFA will have plants for sale and demonstrate all the great activities the agriculture program offers at West Rowan High School.
