Joining Cherokee County 4-H and Virtual Club Meetings

— Written By

Joining Cherokee County 4-H Clubs look a little different right now in the COVID-19 world. While not meeting in person, currently, we are welcoming new members into 4-H. To join 4-H you can enroll in any of our currently active 4-H clubs or enroll at large. To enroll, go to 4HOnline. If you would like to access a step by step video on how to enroll using 4H Online you can get help through this YouTube video. Also if you have trouble enrolling or would like to know more about Cherokee County 4-H you can email or call 828-837-2210 ext. 4.

One of our newest 4-H clubs is our Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Club. The club used to meet weekly before COVID-19 restrictions, each Wednesday (when there is school), from 3–5:30 p.m. (as soon as youth are dismissed from school), at the Extension Education Classroom, at 699 Conaheeta Street, in Murphy. The meeting space is behind the Rock Gym in Murphy in the building that also houses the Parks & Recreation Office. Students at Murphy Middle & High School can take bus 59 to the corner at the Hiawassee Pool and Wellness and walk to the classroom. Look for the N.C. Cooperative Extension sign next to the door.

Currently, this club is not meeting in person but just started meeting virtually so we would love to add some more youth to the club. The club is open to all youth in grades 6th-12th no matter which Cherokee County school or home school they attend.

4-H Volunteer Leader Greg Charles with member Jacob Crisp showing the club how to tie different fly’s.

Youth will be learning how to tie flies of their own as well as casting and all there is to know about fly fishing. We also are looking for more adults that have experience with fly fishing and tying that would just like to help lend a hand with working on projects with the club so if you would like to help out either in Cherokee County on Wednesdays or Clay County on Tuesdays and Thursdays, please call Shannon Coleman in Cherokee County, 828-837-2210 ext. 4 or Julie Lyvers in Clay County, 828-389-6305. would love to have more youth take advantage of this free 4-H club, which is NO CHARGE, for this very hands-on learning experience. So come on out and join us in learning about Fly Fishing or join another 4-H club that spikes your interest.
