Shiitake Mushroom Workshop

— Written By and last updated by

For anyone interested in growing your own mushrooms, we will be offering our thirteenth annual mushroom workshop at the Brasstown Community Building. It will be held on February 11, 2020, starting at noon going till about 4 p.m. The educational seminar will provide information and hands-on training for growing mushrooms. This year, Teresa Goley our Family Consumer Science Agent will have a short presentation on how to preserve and use these mushrooms. The registration fee will be $20 and will cover the cost of materials such as the mushroom spawn, tools, and wax.

If you plan to attend, please bring with you three logs in the following dimensions: 4-6” inches in diameter by 3 to 4’ feet in length. Oak, poplar, and cherry are all suitable types of wood, however, oak (especially white oak) is preferred for optimal growth and longevity. It’s best to have fresh-cut logs and you are encouraged to cut the logs now while the sap is down in the trees.
