Lawn & Garden

Master Gardener volunteers are part of the volunteer staff of NC State University's Cooperative Extension Service. They are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, and gardens. They provide unbiased, research based educational assistance and programs in horticulture and environmental issues to the gardening public. Cherokee County Community Garden Project - "Our Garden, Our Food" is a community garden project facilitated by the Cherokee County Center of NC Cooperative Extension. The project is intended to provide an opportunity for interested individuals of all experience and socio-economic levels with the opportunity to share in the process and product of growing a garden together. Participants are expected to donate 10% of their total crop yield to a local charity. An additional component of the project will teach area students and consequently their families, the concepts of basic gardening and good nutrition.

Gardening is considered our nation's most popular pastime, yielding fresh fruits and vegetables for the dinner table, a cleaner environment and aesthetically pleasing landscapes. North Carolina Cooperative Extension helps gardeners learn more about new plants, native plants and environmental stewardship. Extension-trained Master Gardener volunteers are instrumental in these efforts, sharing their knowledge of plant selection, cultural practices and pest management with fellow gardeners, school students and others.
